The Managing Director of AMALA Clean Energy Advisors (AMALA), Migara Jayawardena, made a presentation and was a panelist on the progress with geothermal development in the Caribbean. Mr. Jayawardena, together with Paolo Bona, who is a geothermal resource specialist were attending the event representing AMALA as a one of the sponsors of the GeoLAC 2924 event in El Salvador. The Permanent Secretary responsible for Energy from Nevis was also on the panel that was moderated by David Vilar from the World Bank, which is co-hosting the event.
Mr. Jayawardena, in his presentation, informed the audience that, after several decades of efforts, the island of Dominica is very close to commissioning a 10 MW power plant. It would be the first new instalaed capacity in the sub-region in more than 30 years, which could create momentum for the others islands who are striving to develop their resources. But, Mr. Jayawardena stated that “all other islands are still at the early stage of development where the geothermal resources are yet to be confirmed to an investment standard”. He highlighted some key areas that simultaneously require the attention of authorities in these countries so that initiative are strategically thought through each of the multi-stage development project. He said “The key is to be strategic and avoid a piecemeal approach”.
